En 1848, su hija Mercedes convenció a San Martín para que posara por primera y única vez ante la cámara de un fotógrafo. Fueron necesarios 40 segundos de inmovilidad del viejo General, para que su imagen quedara estampada en una chapa de 12 x 10 cm. Durante la sesión se tomaron dos daguerrotipos de los cuales sólo uno se conserva.
